General Safety Instructions determine, for defined fields of activity or defined types of equipment, how Safety Regulations (SR), Safety Plans and Procedures (SP) must be implemented. These General Safety Instructions are usually issued to cover CERN-wide aspects.

    Prevention and protection measures

    The purpose of this General Safety Instruction is to define the minimum Safety requirements which prevention and protection measures must satisfy in order to ensure the protection of persons from risks to their health and safety arising, or likely to arise, from the effects of hazardous chemical agents that are present at the workplace or used in any CERN activity.

    It applies to any CERN activity involving hazardous chemical agents.

    Explosive atmospheres

    The purpose of this General Safety Instruction is to define the minimum Safety requirements to ensure the protection of persons from risks to their occupational health and safety arising, or likely to arise, from explosive atmospheres.

    It applies to all CERN activities involving hazardous chemical agents where explosive atmospheres are present or may be present.

    Monitoring of exposure to hazardous chemical agents in workplace atmospheres

    The purpose of this General Safety Instruction is to define the minimum Safety requirements regarding the monitoring of exposure to hazardous chemical agents in workplace atmospheres.

    It applies to all CERN activities where hazardous chemical agents are present or are likely to be present in workplace atmospheres.

    The purpose of this General Safety Instruction is to define the minimum Safety requirements applying to all lifting equipment and accessories belonging to or hired by CERN or the collaborating institutions, used or intended for use at CERN, and to all associated activities. This General Safety Instruction does not apply to the following: • the structures supporting lifting equipment; • lifts, as defined in General Safety Instruction GSI-M-5 “Lifts”.

    The purpose of this General Safety Instruction is to define the minimum Safety requirements applying to all standard pressure equipment and accessories belonging to or hired by CERN or the collaborating institutions, used or intended for use at CERN, and to all associated activities. This General Safety Instruction does not apply to the following: • fire extinguishers; • pressure equipment used with an open-flame; • heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment; • cryogenic equipment.

    Are excluded from the scope of this General Safety Instruction:

    - design aspects;

    - the technical provisions for the layout and execution of works and services;

    - the organization of medical surveillance according to the risks related to the activity or the place where the operation is carried out.

    This General Safety Instruction is implemented from 1 June 2016.
